The largest city in Cambria County, Johnstown is a city defined by industry and history. Johnstown is famous for a flood in 1889 that claimed over 2,000 lives, an event that is the subject of many songs and stories. The city features an Inclined Plane, one of the longest and steepest hoist railways in the world. Originally built as a life-saving device for rescuing residents from recurring floods, today the Inclined Plane is used to ferry vehicles and passengers up the largest hill in the area and features a visitors center, ice cream shop and detailed displays about Johnstown's history. American elms abound in Johnstown, and the city is home to a 3,200-foot stretch of municipally-owned elms. An annual Polka Festival is held in Johnstown every June, featuring some of the most well-known Polish and Slovenian musical groups in the United States.
